Skin Rejuvenation for Stretch Marks

April 2009

The search for safe and effective treatments to improve and rejuvenate the appearance of our skin is never-ending. Stretch marks are a cosmetic blight that some people would like to improve.

The medical terminology for stretch marks is striae. Striae are characterized by a thinning of connective tissue, which produces linear or atrophic-appearing skin. Obesity, rapid weight loss, weightlifting, pregnancy, and inherited defects in the connective tissue are important causative factors in the formation of stretch marks.

Numerous clinical studies in the last couple years have shown that non-ablative fractional resurfacing procedures, such as the Fraxel laser, are safe and effective in treating patients of all skin types with less down time. These laser procedures have commonly been used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture, large pores, and acne or surgical scarring.

More recently, the fractional laser has proven to be an effective treatment for stretch marks as well. Fractional laser resurfacing works by targeting damaged skin in columns of microscopic treatment zones, which include the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin. The laser thermally damages these tiny columns of skin while the surrounding healthy skin is left intact.

The fractional laser resurfacing procedure stimulates the production of new collagen during the body’s natural healing process. The treated skin looks better soon after a series of treatments, but also improves gradually as the new collagen forms. Optimal results are usually noticeable in about four to six weeks.

Studies have shown that the Fraxel laser increased the number of elastic fibers and collagen in the dermis, improving both the texture and appearance of mature, white stretch marks. There were no reported adverse effects.

This type of treatment is often preferred over the more invasive procedures because the results are comparable to that of an invasive treatment without weeks of healing time. Fraxel laser resurfacing is considered a safe, low-risk treatment.
